Random Group Generator

Paste your names, choose a group size or a number of groups, and optionally keep people together or apart. Everything happens on your device - nothing is ever uploaded.

Later rounds avoid seating the same people together again. Keep-together and keep-apart still apply every round.

Runs entirely on your device - nothing is ever uploaded.

How to use random group generator

  1. Paste or type the names, one per line or separated by commas.
  2. Choose people per group, or switch to a number of groups.
  3. Optional: set more than one round, list people who must share a group, and people who must not.
  4. Press Generate. Generate again reshuffles from scratch. If a rule cannot be met, the page says which round failed instead of ignoring the rule.

What it is for

Random groups for classrooms, workshops, retreats, and icebreakers. Groups are filled to your size, and a final smaller group is made if the count does not divide evenly. Several rounds keep the same rules and try not to repeat partners.

How it works

With no rules and one round, names are shuffled in your browser and sliced into groups of the size you chose. A number-of-groups split keeps the groups as even as possible. Keep-together names are placed as a block, and keep-apart names are refused a shared group. Later rounds reuse those rules and prefer partners who have not already shared a group. If that fresh arrangement is impossible, the page says so. If the rules cannot all be met, nothing is generated and the reason is shown, including which round failed. Nothing leaves your device.
