How to use the unit converter

  1. Pick a category: length, temperature, area, volume, weight, or time.
  2. Type a value in the From field and choose its unit. Fractions such as 1/2 work, and 1,000 is read as one thousand.
  3. The converted value appears instantly. Swap units, edit either side, or copy the result.

What it is for

Homework, cooking, travel, DIY projects, fitness, and science class - anywhere two measurement systems meet. Typical uses: miles to kilometres for a trip, cups to millilitres for a recipe, pounds to kilograms for a workout log, or °F to °C before setting an oven.

How it works

Each unit carries its exact internationally defined factor to a shared base unit (metres, square metres, litres, kilograms, seconds); temperature converts through offset formulas, e.g. °C = (°F − 32) × 5⁄9 and K = °C + 273.15. Results are computed on your device instantly as you type, so nothing you enter leaves the browser.

Worked example

Convert 5 ft 7 in to centimetres: 5 ft = 152.4 cm and 7 in = 17.78 cm, so 5′7″ = 170.18 cm. Or convert 350 °F to °C: (350 − 32) × 5⁄9 = 176.7 °C - the standard 350 °F baking temperature. You can type 5*12+7 or 1/2 in the value field; fractions and comma-grouped thousands are parsed before converting.

Limitations

Conversions use exact definition factors (1 in = 2.54 cm; 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg), displayed rounded to a readable precision - for lab work, re-check the unrounded figure against your required significant figures. Temperature intervals ("a rise of 10 °F") differ from absolute temperatures and need separate handling. For currency, which changes daily, use a live rate source rather than a fixed converter.
