How to use the average calculator

  1. Paste or type your numbers into the box - spaces, commas and line breaks all work.
  2. The mean, median, mode, count, sum, min, max and range update instantly.
  3. Read the working underneath to see the sorted list, the sum and the division.

Mean, median and mode - which average do you need?

The mean adds every value and divides by the count. The median is the middle value of the sorted list (or the average of the two middle values for an even count). The mode is the most frequent value - a list can have one mode, several, or none. For skewed data such as house prices, the median usually describes a "typical" value better than the mean.

Worked example

For 4, 7, 10, 7, 3: sorted, that is 3, 4, 7, 7, 10. The sum is 31 and the count is 5, so the mean is 31 ÷ 5 = 6.2. The middle value is 7 (median), 7 appears twice so it is the mode, and the range is 10 − 3 = 7.
