How to use the percent off calculator
- Type the original price - decimals like 59.99 work fine.
- Type the discount percentage - from 0 to 100.
- Read the exact savings and the final sale price.
How to calculate percent off
The discount is a fraction of the original price: multiply the price by the percentage, then subtract it from the price.
Sale price = original price × (1 − percent ÷ 100)
Example: 25% off an $80 jacket. The markdown is $80 × 0.25 = $20, so the sale price is $80 − $20 = $60. Equivalently you pay 75% of the original: $80 × 0.75 = $60.
Stacking discounts
When a store stacks two discounts (say 20% then an extra 10% off), they apply one after another, not summed: the price becomes 0.8 × 0.9 = 72% of the original, an effective 28% off - not 30%. To compute a stacked discount here, run the calculator twice, using the first sale price as the new original.
Common percent-off shortcuts
50% off = half price. 25% off = a quarter off - divide by 4 and subtract. 10% off = move the decimal one place left. 15% off = 10% + half of the 10%. These mental shortcuts match the calculator exactly.
