How to use the auto loan calculator

  1. Enter the vehicle price, down payment, trade-in value and anything still owed on it.
  2. Add your local sales tax rate and dealer fees.
  3. Set the loan rate and term to get the monthly payment and the true total cost.

Amount financed, explained

You do not finance the sticker price. Sales tax - figured on the price after trade-in credit, the way most states do it - plus fees join it, then the down payment and net trade-in (value minus what you still owe) come off. The remainder is the amount financed, and interest accrues on that. A few states tax the full price before trade-in credit, so treat the result as a close estimate and confirm with the dealer sheet.

Worked example

A $32,000 car with $4,000 down, a $6,000 trade-in owned outright, 7% tax and $500 fees finances about $24,320. At 7% over 5 years that is roughly $482 a month.
